A group of about 20 migrants allegedly tried to board a California school bus picking up students on Wednesday, just a day after a smaller group tried to do the same, sparking fears and concerns among parents.
This incident was one of two that occurred at a bus stop near Highway 94 and Cochera, as a group of migrants attempted to board the buses along the school routes for two straight days.
The buses were picking up students from the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District in Jamul – about 19 miles east of San Diego.
In a letter sent to parents obtained by KUSI-TV, Superintendent Liz Bystedt said that on Tuesday afternoon a group of three migrants were walking in the middle of Highway 94 trying to stop one of the district’s school buses.
The brief interruption forced the school bus driver to “go around” the group.
Then on the following morning, a larger group of as many as 20 migrants rushed to another school bus as it was picking up students from the same stop.
The parents who were present at the stop reportedly helped the bus driver make sure that none of the migrants entered the bus.
It is not clear whether there were any connection between the two groups.
While there were no reported injuries to the schoolchildren, bus drivers, or the migrants involved, this string of incidents left the Jamul community fearful.
Nicole Cardinale told KUSI-TV that her eight-year-old son was on one of the affected bus, describing her child’s encounter with this incident as “really scary.”
“These adults, they weren’t kids except that they had backpacks on and they were trying to get on our bus. There was a lot of them,” Cardinale said.
The Jamul-Dulzura Union School District has reported these two incidents to US Border Patrol, California Highway Patrol and the San Diego’s Sheriff’s office, Bystedt wrote in the letter.
Bystedt also reportedly announced that buses have been instruced to skip over bus stops where migrants are nearby, and head directly to the next along the school route for “the safety of students and bus drivers.”
“Please stay [vigilant] and if the bus drives by, please follow the bus to pick up your child at the next stop,” Bystedt told families.
While it is not clear why the migrants attempted to board the bus, human rights advocate Pedro Rios told KUSI-TV that the heat and mountainous terrain would trigger a desparate response from migrants to find “a much safer area.”
“We are conducting a follow up investigation to determine if a criminal act has occurred,” the San Diego Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.”
“The Sheriff’s Office takes issues regarding student safety very seriously and are working with the school district in order to keep the students and our community safe.”
San Diego became the busiest corridor for migrant arrivals for the first time in decades, as migrants were arrested nearly 128,900 times on the US-Mexico border in April, according to US Customs and Border Protection.
San Diego’s draw lies in part because Tijuana is the largest city on the Mexican side of the border, with people of nearly 100 nationalities have arrived at Tijuana’s airport this year, including 12,000 each from Colombia and Cuba, about 6,000 each from Haiti and Venezuela and thousands more from Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, China and Mauritania.
