Newport News, Virginia: On January 6, a 6-year old boy shot his first grade teacher Abigail Zwerner at Richneck Elementary School and the bullet penetrated her hand and went into her chest. She had life-threatening injuries and spent two weeks in the hospital.
The boy was known to throw furniture and other objects in the classroom and once wrote a note to a teacher in which he told her hated her, wanted to set her on fire to kill her.
The boy’s parents said that he “suffers from an acute disability” and his mother or father accompanied him to class every day, however, the week of the shooting “was the first week when we were not in class with him.” They said that their 9mm handgun that was used in the shooting was acquired legally and had been ‘secured’.
Zwerner and other teachers said they had shared their fears about the child’s grave behavior with administrators, only to have their concerns downplayed or ignored. At least one school official had been alerted the boy may have brought a weapon to school hours before the shooting, but none was found after searching his backpack.
This shooting event was the third shooting in the district since September 2021.
Teachers reported that violent students bite, hit and beat other students and adult teachers and staff on a daily basis. But violent students are allowed to remain in school because disciplinary referrals are closely tied to accreditation, which threatens federal and state government funding for the school. Many violent incidents go unreported.
As of 2020, 21 states and the District of Columbia had passed legislation supporting the use of restorative practices in schools, rather than suspension and expulsion from school. Black children often are suspended or expelled at rates much higher than White children and researchers have found that these discipline disparities can have lifelong consequences for children, such as worsened educational outcomes and higher rates of incarceration.
Michelle Price, a spokesperson for the Newport News schools, said in an email that the district’s code of conduct “fosters the school division’s mission to ensure all students graduate ‘citizen-ready.’ Meanwhile, parents in the school district are demanding a harder line on discipline.

A 16-year old Asian student, Nathaniel Berhow, is the suspect in a shooting at Saugus High School that killed two students and left more injured. Reports indicate there is video evidence that the suspect turned the handgun on himself and is in ‘grave’ condition.
Ernest Rospierski, a history teacher from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, told the Associated Press he thought the shooting event was a drill at first because was warned earlier that day that a code red drill would be taking place and he believed they would be shooting blanks. He said that the shooter was wearing a mask.
In both cases, the shooters claimed to be in a daze and felt they were being mind controlled. In both cases, they said they heard voices in their heads urging them to kill. In both cases, the killers were well known to police as highly dangerous but were not apprehended. In both cases, the police stood down long enough to allow the shooters to use their ammunition before moving in to stop them. And in both cases, Sheriff Israel used the tragedy to call for confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens.

Public schools are often letting extreme behavior kids in schools, schools are more worried about having full enrolment then their are the safety of their students, there are children who should not be allowed to be in a class with normal children, my wife is a teacher in a public school and I hear about kids all the time that have no business in a normal school.
