Georgia’s new voting law introduced stricter voter identification requirements for mail-in voting, limited drop boxes for absentee ballots, reduced the authority of Georgia’s Secretary of State, reducing him to a nonvoting member of the State Election Board, and expanded the legislature’s power over elections. The NY Times reported that companies in Georgia faced outrage from activists, customers, and a coalition of powerful Black executives after large companies did not immediately oppose the legislation before it was passed. Businesses may be used to pressure other states seeking to clean up their voting policies. Georgia’s House voted to strip Delta Airlines of a $35 million tax break as a rebuke of CEO Ed Bastian, who criticized the recent changes to the state’s voting laws. However, it was only symbolic as the state senate did not vote. Other companies to speak out against the voting law included Coca-Cola, Home Depot and Apple.

“They like our public policy when we’re doing things that benefit them,” Ralston said, adding, “You don’t feed a dog that bites your hand. You got to keep that in mind sometimes.”
