‘Rape gangs’ refers to a series of child sexual exploitation scandals in the United Kingdom, where groups of predominantly Pakistani-heritage men targeted and abused young white British girls from disadvantaged homes. The scale of grooming gangs has been found to be far more extensive than initially thought 14 years ago, and the rape gangs have affected 50 towns rather than the six originally identified. Little has been done to prosecute offenders and stop the practice; instead, there were cover-ups.
PM Starmer is facing backlash after saying that politicians were “calling for inquiries because they want to jump on a bandwagon of the far-right”. A critic noted that accusing those who seek legitimate answers about repeated failures of child protection, as ‘far right’ is deeply insulting and counterproductive. “He [Starmer] is the best recruiting sergeant for extremism.”

“In Telford, Lucy Lowe died at 16 alongside her mother and sister when her abuser set fire to her home in 2000. She had given birth to Azhar Ali Mahmood’s child when she was just 14, and was pregnant when she was killed.
Her death was subsequently used to threaten other children. The Telford Inquiry found particularly brutal threats. When one victim aged 12 told her mother, and the mother called the police, “there was about six or seven Asian men who came to my house. They threatened my mum saying they’ll petrol bomb my house if we don’t drop the charges.”
Yet in a pattern that would repeat itself, Telford’s authorities looked the other way. When an independent review was finally published in 2022, it found police officers described parts of the town as a “no-go area”, while witnesses set out multiple allegations of police corruption and favouritism towards the Pakistani community. Regardless of the reason, the inquiry found that “there was a nervousness about race… bordering on a reluctance to investigate crimes committed by what was described as the ‘Asian’ community”.
Similar concerns applied at the council, where anxieties over appearing racist saw safeguarding officers waving away concerns simply because the perpetrators were Asian.”

A female Pakistani activist, Khadija Khan, said, “It’s not a conspiracy or ‘far right’ to say that Pakistani men are disproportionately involved. It’s something that’s a fact. There should be no shame in dealing with facts because it’s impacting people inside and outside the community.“
She added that the mindset in her community regarding Western women plays a part in their crimes.
“I want to address the mindset. It’s ingrained. Not only men but women are also brainwashed. Western women are presented as an example of disobedient women, as vulgar women with no moral compass,” said Khan. “Western women are labelled as ‘immoral’ and ‘fair game’.”
She added that she believes an inquiry should not just be about bringing perpetrators to justice, it should also look at what enabled the abusers to carry out what they did.
