FTX customers believed that it was investing their money in cryptocurrencies that they requested. However, an interviewer asked the former head of FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, why there was no more Bitcoin for customers to withdraw, and suggested it was because the Bitcoin did not actually exist as SBF was just letting customers buy notional or imaginary tokens rather than Bitcoin. SBF responded by saying, “I believe that what you’re saying is part of what happened.”
Ukraine used FTX to send money to the Democrat party. SBF reportedly donated $40 million to Democrats in the midterm elections. Elon Musk tweeted, “SBF donated $40m to not go to jail for stealing $10b+ is one of the highest ROI trades of all time”. Musk then wrote that SBF’s actual support of the Democrat elections was probably over $1 billion and he asked where that money went.
Musk was concerned about the influx of migrants who can make the US a socialist state under the Democrats. China has tried to ban cryptocurrencies before, ordering third-party payment providers to stop using bitcoin, banning token sales and crypto exchanges, and outlawing mining, but it has failed. China is aggressively clearing the runway for its own central bank digital currency that tracks all transactions.
Sources reported that FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried transferred $4 billion from his FTX crypto exchange to Alameda, his crypto trading firm, earlier in 2022 without telling anyone. Losses related to FTX spread beyond the firm itself and to stocks tied to cryptocurrencies.
SBF was found guilty in November on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy, but won’t face a second trial at all after feds told the judge that in the ‘interest of expediency’ it would drop six charges related to SBF’s second trial – including conspiracy to bribe foreign officials, and bank fraud.
