Last Friday, Iran’s National Oil Company reported that explosions ignited a fire on one of its tankers that was 60 miles from the Saudi port city of Jiddah. Iran has not stated who they suspect is the culprit. Following the news of the attack against Iran, the US announced that it will send 3,000 ground troops and two squadrons of fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to “confront” Iran. The rapid announcement of this deployment by the Pentagon suggests they were prepared for an incident like this. -GEG
Though the timing of this seems fairly obviously linked to the missile incident, Pentagon officials made no mention that it even happened, instead citing last month’s drone attack on Saudi oil refineries, which Yemen’s Houthis claimed credit for but the US blamed on Iran.
The US had already sent troops and defensive missiles to the Saudi kingdom over the refineries. Defense Secretary Mark Esper claimed the move was based on a “heightened threat” from Iran.
Tensions are certainly higher, even if the Iranian threat is almost always overstated. Having an oil tanker hit with missiles would certainly have this effect on tensions. Airstrikes in northern Syria killed at least 26 people, many of them Iranian soldiers who back Syria. The bombing registered at 2.6 on the Richter scale for earthquakes. Russia and Syria are blaming Israel for the attack. Israel has entered Syria’s borders to attack it without provocation, both recently and historically. The bombing took place after new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Netanyahu for several hours. Pompeo pledged the US to fight for Israel.
An unidentified female student says there were “definitely three shooters” in the building. She says the students previously had been put through drills, so they believed the real shooting was just another drill. Offscreen, young men who are believed to be students, are heard saying: “They told us about a drill where they were gonna be shooting blanks.” Alexa Miednik, a senior, reported that she was walking with and talking to the suspect, Nikolas Cruz, while she heard shots from another area of the school. She says there must have been other shooters because Cruz did not have a gun.
