South Africa: There have been 6 killings since July 29, 2023, when Marxist leader Julius Malema sang “Kill the Boer” for the first time in 10 years, in front of 90,000 supporters in Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium. The lyrics to the song, which originated as an anti-apartheid chant, include the words “Kill the Boer, the farmer,” a reference to white South Africans. Malema chanted those lyrics into a microphone along with the crowd at a large rally, pointing his finger like a gun.
After Twitter/X CEO Elon Musk called out the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) for staying “silent” on Malema’s party that chanting for the “literal genocide” of whites, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt issued a tepid condemnation of what he called the “crude lyrics” of their “historic protest song” that he said “could be interpreted as a call for violence.”
More than 20,000 people are murdered every year in South Africa so violence is no surprise. What separates these murders from many others is their brutality and the innocence of the victims.
A critic responded to the ADL’s comment on Twitter/X and wrote, “Alice and Helen Lotter’s blood was used to write “Kill the Boer” on the walls of their house after they were tortured and murdered. I guess you can see the chant as “a call for violence”.
Alice, 75, and Helen Lotter, 57, an unarmed mother and daughter, were brutally tortured and killed with a broken beer bottle and knife in 2009 by their gardener.
