El Salvador Claims Zero Murders in 300 Days Amid Gang Crackdown

In just three years under President Nayib Bukele, El Salvador went from the murder capital of the world to reporting "zero murders in 300 days" thanks to a fierce crackdown on gangs which saw 64,000 suspected gang members rounded up and thrown in jail. A critic wrote that 90 people died in police custody in November 2022 and said that El Salvador is killing violent criminals while petty criminals are being imprisoned. The definition of homicide has been changed to exclude people who are killed by police, people who die in prison and people who die in confrontations with police. Despite the suspension of some constitutional rights, such as warrantless arrests and the shelving of  detainees' rights to a lawyer, 92% of the population supports the state of exception program.

A government official said that El Salvador’s state of emergency to combat gangs will be maintained until all criminals are captured.[/su_note.
