California’s recent crime wave is the fruit of a lack consequences for criminals due to criminal justice reform and no-cash bail that has now resulted in the shooting death of a security guard, numerous ‘smash and grab’ robberies of high end retail stores and drug stores, and the theft of $5 million in marijuana products. The shooting death of an 81-year old Beverly Hills socialite may also be related to increased burglaries in the suburbs.

Summary by JW Williams

In California, a statewide policy of imposing $0 bail for misdemeanors and lower-level felonies ended last year, but it was kept in place within the LA County Superior Court system. Lack of consequences for crimes is causing it to skyrocket.

On December 1, Jacqueline Avant, 81, was shot to death in her $7 million home at 2:30 in the morning. One hour later, police reported that Aerial Maynor was allegedly burglarizing another home and accidentally shot himself in the foot with an AR-15 rifle; surveillance videos showed Maynor’s car leaving the Avant property fter the shooting. Beverly Hills police have not yet linked the Avant murder to increased thefts in the area, although neighbors were in the process of hiring security guards.

On November 30, a Los Angeles woman was followed home from walking her baby in a stroller in the park, and was robbed by two suspects in her driveway after opening the gates to her estate.

Police in Los Angeles had announced 14 arrests last in connection with 11 recent smash-and-grab robberies at stores where merchandise valued at $340,000 was stolen, but all the suspects have been released. In Los Angeles, homicides jumped 46.7% and shootings are up 51.4% vs. 2019.

In Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area, $5 million in marijuana products were stolen from more than 15 cannabis shops last month, with gangs of thieves firing 175 shots. The robberies were part of a series of ‘smash-and-grab’ thefts happening across California and concentrated in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles.

On November 24 in Oakland, Kevin Nishita, a retired Oakland police officer, was working as a security guard for the KRON4 news team and while on the scene at one of the organized smash-and-grab heists, a group of looters broke off from the rest and went after the TV crew for their cameras and equipment, and shot Nishita, who died several days later.
