Facebook, using the excuse that it has been criticized for not doing enough to combat extremism on its platform, is testing a pilot program that will let users know if it detects that they are being exposed to any kind of extremist material. The social media site also asked some of their users to report people that they think may fall under the extremist umbrella. Gateway Pundit pointed out that Facebook is using the Communist method of asking people to turn in neighbors. There are no rules to their definition. Anyone could be turned in for supporting free speech or saying something they don’t like. Facebook will be the judge.

Facebook is testing a feature in the US that asks users if they are worried somebody they know is becoming an extremist.

Other users may also receive an alert saying they may have been exposed to extremist content.

The trial messages are part of Facebook’s Redirect Initiative which aims to combat extremism.

The pop-ups redirect users to a support page.

“This test is part of our larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content or may know someone who is at risk,” a Facebook spokeswoman said.

The tech firm is working with non-governmental organisations and academic experts on this project, she added.

‘Becoming an extremist?’

Screenshots of the pop-ups were posted on social media.

One asked: “Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?”

“You may have been exposed to harmful extremist content recently,” another said. “Violent groups try to manipulate your anger and disappointment.

“You can take action now to protect yourself and others.”

Both prompts direct users to a page with support related to extremism.

“Extremism’ is a word deliberately chosen for its vagueness and used by intellectual slobs who are too desperate, sneaky or lazy to say exactly what they mean. Its only purpose is to deliberately try to confuse the difference between people who are extremely good (usually because of devotion to their principles) with people who are extremely bad. The sleazeballs who use this supposedly scary, yet undefined word are not only trying to smear people of conviction and integrity, but they’re also trying to divert attention away from the fact that they are obviously not people of principle themselves.” ~ Rick… Read more »
